Dr. Barry Feldman

Biography

Dr. Feldman is a nationally-recognized researcher, trainer, and educator in the field of suicide intervention and prevention, with a particular focus working with front-line responders. He specializes in suicide training and stabilization services for police officers, correction/detention officers, military service members, firefighters, and other EMS responders. Dr. Feldman serves as a suicide prevention consultant to the Massachusetts National Guard. He is a sought after
trainer and speaker on the topic of suicide prevention and response in public safety settings.

Dr. Feldman provides technical assistance to schools and universities across the country to help in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and strategies to prevent suicide, and to create appropriate postvention responses in the aftermath of suicide or other traumatic and sudden deaths that affect both the school and the local community. Dr. Feldman is regarded as a principal presenter on mental health and suicide risk for professional groups such as physicians, mental health workers, and veterinarians.

Dr. Feldman has developed specialized teaching materials in the field of suicidology and created management programs for trauma recovery, substance abuse and crisis intervention. He is a subject matter expert on the impact of suicide calls for responding police officers, and created a first-of-its kind online training needs assessment for emergency medical technicians in Massachusetts and utilized his findings to design EMT-specific training modules. Dr. Feldman is a highly-respected expert witness for cases involving complex psychiatric matters as well as a valued legal consultant.

Dr. Feldman holds a research appointment with the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs and, through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, conducts suicide prevention-related workshops and in-service training sessions for police officers and other law enforcement personnel, mental health clinicians, educators, and other health care providers. He is also an approved trainer for the American Academy of Suicidology, the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, and a certified trainer for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. He is a former Chairman of the Massachusetts Coalition for Suicide Prevention.
